When I was young like most of us with dyslexia, reading was like being Superman and having to play with Kryptonite. It takes a lot of energy and time to get the information through reading. Most people with dyslexia have a great ability to take in information through listening. I can quote movies that I haven't seen in years and can recite parts of previous conversations verbatim. For me, it is the most efficient way to acquire the information.
There are great tools to use when you’re talking about reading books, magazines and newspapers by "listening”. I have used one of these throughout my life and it is definitely in my bag. This service is called Audible. This program allows you to download books, magazines and newspapers through a service. It will give you the ability to access News and Books from anywhere and everywhere. It's accessible through all of your different electronic devices and different operating systems.
The primary use it for me in my everyday life is the news. As a person who is interacting with people all the time I would like to know what's going on in the world. Being current gives me the ability to stay in conversations and voice opinions on different things that are going on. The daily news feed that I get from Audible is a key part of that process.
Through a membership that costs $14.95.per month, you will get access to their book library and also to the weekly New York Times( Monday through Friday). I use the Audible mobile app to download the file to my phone. ( I recommend that you do this on a wireless network since it's a little faster and you're not using your data service on your cell phone). Once you've done that and it tells you that the file is ready to play, just click on it. If then will open the file and allow you to listen. While you are listening you can adjust the speed of the text to speech reader. You can create bookmarks if you would like to listen to different parts of it later. You can also look at the newspaper sections which group stories by subject if you would like to skip a section or go back. Next to the play and pause button on the left side is a 30 Second reverse and on the right side it's a 30 second forward. I use this function a lot when I want to repeat the information to make sure that I understand what they're saying. Or if I'm taking notes I want to make sure I wrote it down correctly.
This is just one of the tools that you can use to make your everyday information gathering just a little bit easier.
